Layered Abstract Paintings

by Brenda Denise Severson

Where every layer reveals part of the story

Behind the layers

Every painting begins with uncertainty. I build, erase, cover, sand, and reveal, allowing each layer to leave behind a memory of what came before. The finished piece isn't about perfection; it's about discovery. Hidden beneath every surface is the history of the painting itself, where each revealed mark is shaped by everything that came before.

Many of my paintings are intentionally sanded back, allowing earlier decisions to emerge again. Those rediscovered marks become as important as the ones I leave on the surface.

My work is an invitation to slow down, look closer, and discover the stories waiting beneath the surface.

The Surface is only the Beginning
